Kim Kyoungae’s latest collection is titled ‘Moderato’. This is a term used to describe music that is not too fast and not too slow. Kyoungae is inspired by this word which means moderate. She says in life one tries to perform a balancing act and practice moderation in action and decisions one takes. As a Korean living in
“My life is hybrid. I am replanted in a different soil. I have to maintain moderation between my Korean roots and my Indian surrounding. These paintings reflect my age and stage in life.”
For Kyoungae, 41, painting is a kind of meditation. Her understanding of life and what she is experiencing is reflected in her work. For her painting this collection was like writing poetry. This suite marks her ambitious attempt at painting on a bigger scale. There are three 8 x 6 feet paintings, besides other sizes.
Curator Jasmine Shah Varma says about her work: “How does one imbue the idea of moderation in the medium of painting? Two worlds seamlessly come together in Kyoungae’s works. One is the world that surrounds us and the other is within thoughts and memory. She metaphorically expresses the middle path between what one has and what one aspires to have, between this path and that path. Her works are not literal but experiential.”
