<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<a href="http://indialicensingpost.com/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: inherit; color: #ee3333; text-decoration: inherit;">India Licensing Post’s</a> editorial team got an opportunity to converse with Jasmine Shah Varma, an art curator, and writer. She shared her views on the business dynamics, market scenario, and opportunities for art licensing in India.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">When did you chance on this opportunity of working with Indian artists and licensing their work?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– My long association with contemporary Indian artists has made licensing their art possible. Indian Colours launched in 2013 but I had been writing about art and curating exhibitions of contemporary art since much before. My endeavor was always to bring in newer audiences and for them to understand the medium of visual art in India. I found after years of curating that people simply did not prioritize visiting art galleries and making an attempt to appreciate art. I did experiments such as get artists to paint on postcards and lampshades in the hope that it will draw in newer audiences. We had success with the regular art gallery audience. Eventually, by 2012 I started wondering what if art were made a part of the mass lifestyle, homes filled with art collectibles which are not just there on the wall but can be used as bag, scarves, mugs and other things such that anyone who sets eyes on them can own it. I shared my vision with artists expressing the need to reach audiences beyond gallery spaces and entering their homes through affordable products. They supported it wholeheartedly. Contemporary art of a country need not be a privilege of just a few, it should reach the masses.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">What are the artists that you work with?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– The artists associated with Indian Colours are practicing artists, who work in mediums such as painting, photography, mixed media and installations. They are based in different parts of the country and all of them have years and years of art practice and long lists of exhibitions behind them. They are internationally noted whose original works are priced considerably. Some of the artists we work with are Anjana Mehra, Babu Xavier, Brinda Miler, Deepak Shinde, Dhruvi Acharya, Jaideep Mehrotra, Samir Mondal, Shruti Nelson, Shubha Gokhale and Waswo X Waswo among a growing list.They are fine artists and not illustrators, graphic designers or hobby artists. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to adapt their creations to utility products and not sell at a premium.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">What is the product mix and distribution platforms?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– We have wearable art which includes stoles, shrugs and kaftan dresses for women. We recently launched art shirts for men. The next category we have is home décor including cushion covers, table linen, ceramic plates, mugs, and coasters. And we have accessories such as pouches, canvas tote bags, and sling bags. We keep adding to the repertoire.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
All our products are sold online on <a href="http://www.indiancolours.com/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: inherit; color: #ee3333; text-decoration: inherit;">Indiancolours.com</a>. They are listed on Flipkart and Amazon besides niche marketplaces like Mojarto and StoryLtd. For the physical experience, we retail through standalone boutiques in various Indian cities.</div>
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="box-sizing: inherit;">
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Who are the typical consumers?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– Mostly, people who are looking for unique, classy articles at comfortable price points. They may or may not know about the Indian art scene or specific artists we work with. They are always glad to know that their eye caught something irreplicable and unique which has a story behind it. They are often bought for gifting as our products are exclusive.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Art licensing is a large business in the west. What’s your experience been in India?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– I have observed that people like aesthetically appealing things that stand out from the regular. That said because there is a gap in the awareness of what a work of art is vis a vis kitsch art, graphic design or illustration, people are unable to value the creativity of the established artists who spend a lifetime to create a unique visual language. There is also the confusion over mass-produced designs vis a vis the limited run of digitally printed products. The lack of understanding the difference is most evident among managers in charge of merchandise acquisition in shops and chain stores. Since there is so little knowledge of what fine art is and how it is made, there are some challenges. But we are getting there a step at a time over the years.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Do you partner with organized retail? Which outlets have been more receptive?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– We are doing very well with standalone specialized boutiques that cater to niche audiences. We have not yet started with retail chain stores. But we hope to get there soon as we will be filling the gap for aesthetic and genuinely collectible utility products in the market.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Anything to do with art is still considered the preserve of the wealthy, how have you sought to dispel this notion and make art more accessible?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– Typically, paintings by the artists we work with sell for a few hundred thousand. These can be seen only in art exhibitions in galleries and museums. They are perhaps available for viewing to the public once or probably twice in the life of the painting. We make an artwork accessible in multiple places at once online and through shops. Our price range starts at Rs 250 for art by any noted artist in our repertoire.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Which product forms lend themselves best to art?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– With digital technology, the sky is the limit.</div>

</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Which are the key criteria you look for in a potential licensor?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– Firstly, the artist should be well established and noted for their fine art. Not all art is adaptable. So, artworks that lend well to adaptation are selected. Finally, the art should meet my aesthetic criteria. Indian Colours is a curated experience.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Has the online channel broadened the horizon for Indian artists to license their work? Can you share some examples?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– I do not see any online or other channels that works with respected, top-notch artists for the Indian open market. There are websites that work with graphic designers and illustrators, which is different from licensing contemporary art.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">How does the commercial construction work between you and the artist?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– We work on a royalty basis.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">You’re considered one of the pioneers in the field of art licensing. Prior to that, you were a journalist. How did you make the jump?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– From writing about art for mainstream papers I went on to curating art exhibitions. Through my experiences of curating and looking how audiences perceived the notion of contemporary art, I realized that an effort has to be made to bring art to them in a manner that is least intimidating. I wanted to do more than offset reproductions on paper. Thus, I started finding ways to make that happen. Having no background in production or manufacturing I thank the internet where I stumbled upon digital technology which is cost effective and fast compared to previous means like screen printing for reproduction of art.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">

<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700;">Tell us about some of the upcoming initiatives/exhibitions planned by Indian Colours.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 15px;">
– This year Indian Colours will be focused on taking the wide range of products to more physical stores.</div>

Expressions inspired by nature are a dominant theme running through this collection.
Watercolour veteran Samir Mondal spreads the joy of floral beauty through his
compositions. Concerns about the relationship between humankind and the animal
kingdom are explored variedly in the works of artists Babu Xavier, Deepak
Shinde, Pradeep Mishra and Shruti Nelson. Mumbai artists Brinda Miller and
Jyotee’s compositions draw our attention to the play of colours, forms and
textures. Aashna Jhaveri’s subtle, abstract explorations in paper are inspired
by maps and geographical terrains. Soumen Das from Vadodara works in pastel shades
to evoke topographical beauty. Haren Vakil, an architect-turned-artist creates
a quirky, surrealist world through his paintings. While the works of Anjana
Mehra, Dhruvi Acharya, Gautam Mukherjii, Nikhileswar Baruah, Rajendra Kapse, and
Shubha Gokhale express concerns about the human condition through their respective
works.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the quickest ways for a fresh look for your home is to get new soft furnishings. A change in the colour scheme of your curtains, carpets, throws and cushion covers can transform the feel and sight of a room. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Focus on a theme for furnishings. For instance, if you like nature go for colours and imagery that evoke lush greenery and rejuvenating visuals. Select soft pastel greens, or prints with motifs like flowers, leaves or a landscape. A quirky theme can transform a room into a playful, light-hearted place for friendly gatherings. A mix of solid colours and prints highlights certain areas of the room. Your special armchair could do well with a printed, theme cushion cover which goes well for with your personality. </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Colour blocks interspersed with abstract compositions looks sophisticated on neutral coloured sofas. Highlight your seating arrangement with a work of art either on the wall or in the form of fine art prints on cushion covers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Change is constant! Why should the place we live in be unchanged for years. Keep a set of themes ready and every now and then change the decor with a few, quick alterations in the furnishings.</span><br />

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">It is natural for artists to be fascinated by cities. The movement of
history is the movement of human beings into cities, giant melting pots where
culture and values and changing ways of living and thinking are thrown together
in a tumultuous, fascinating mess. By 2050, it is estimated, between 65% to 80%
of humanity will live in cities. This movement into cities is especially
fascinating in India, where there is also a simultaneous rush towards
modernity. It is no wonder that some of the fascinating, cutting-edge art
coming out of India deals with just this subject.</span></div>

artists whose work features powerful urban narratives: Anjana Mehra, Gautam
Bhatia, Indrapramit Roy, Jaideep Mehrotra, Meera Devidayal and Shilpa
Gavane. But the city is more than just the subject matter of their work: their
visual language, the motifs they use, the iconography they embrace, is also a
product of the city. Field of Vision examines both of ‘What’ as well as the
‘How’ of their work. What fascinates them? What about it fascinates them? How
does it affect the visual language they use to explore this fascination? How
are their narratives an extension of where Indian art has gone before, and a precursor
to what might come? These are some of the questions that this exhibition
explores.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

They changed their ‘What’ and their ‘How’ at the same time as well. They moved away
from historical and religious subjects to portray, in their vivid distinctive
styles, the world as they saw it around them. The pavement cafes of Paris, the
ballrooms, the green expanses of the countryside, the movement towards
modernity depicted through train tracks and bridges converging in the mist: we
see their world as they saw it, and as it no longer exists. But you can’t help
but wonder: what is it that they left out? What fell between the gaps? For
every artist portrays a perspective according to his or her field of vision.
They bring light to certain aspects over others.</span></div>

<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Indian Colours completes 1 year!</h2>
In September 2013 Indian Colours launched with a range of products of utility featuring paintings by contemporary Indian artists. A year later, with a step at a time, we have grown. Our list of products now includes table runners, ladies wallets, travel-utility pouches, precious boxes to list a few. And along the way, as promised, the family of artists has also grown. The products are available on more platforms, including Amazon.in and Flipkart.com.<br />
<br />
We want to do much more, and this is just a very exciting beginning for us. We are overwhelmed how people have received and appreciated the products. Making art accessible beyond the scope of art galleries and museums has be fulfilling. The originality in the art printed on products has drawn most of the appreciation. We are glad to note that Indian art has a much wider audience than art gallery attendance would have us believe.<br />
<br />
Our new collection is ready just in time for the festive season. Sharing a collection of colourful and joyous cushion covers here. And there is more coming soon.<br />
#LivingWithArt is #LivingInStyle. Don't just hang it, use it!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Featuring some extraordinary contemporary Indian artists, this show opens on January 16th at The Viewing Room. Works were specially made for this show. I asked the artists to <span style="font-family: Cambria, serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">examine their concerns through the prism of emotions. Our
emotions shape our world view but we choose to believe that we are rational
beings at most times. Across cultures, races and genders it is emotions, among
other aspects, that are universal. Through the history of the arts – whether
it’s literature, theatre, or the visual and performing arts – at core are
protagonists, their emotional palette, and the actions resulting from it. The
imagery created by an artist, characters in a book, the scenes enacted in a
play or a movie, or the ideas evoked in poetry are there for us to reflect upon
our actions and the human condition. Once in a while we are able to connect to
these mirroring artistic constructs and empathise with the emotions depicted in
them. We are able to say THEY ARE US and thus find clarity and succour in
knowing who we are. The premise of the show is to deliberate on the emotions
evoked in the works of art and to recognise and accept our emotional responses
at various levels. </span></div>

exciting line-up of works are made in mediums such as painting on paper pulp
and tempera on silk fabric, sculptures made of paper, applique, embroidery, and
natural dyes used in paintings, and illusionary triographs. Simrin Mehra-Agarwal
has depicted characters from various novels in her paintings to mimic book
covers. Prajakta Palav-Aher has photo-documented and then painted interiors of
homes in Bandra-Koliwada, Bhandup and Dharavi to portray middleclass culture
and attitude to their immediate surroundings. Vinita Das Gupta has juxtaposed rolled
photographs, small paintings, and popular posters to make kitschy and
provocative portraits. Sharmi Chowdhury’s has sensitively used paper and silk to
reveal human fragility in her delicate works. Lavanya Mani examines the
complexity matters of the heart in her textile art. And Akash Choyal interprets
the world through dream-like illusory imagery. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
